What is Botulinum Toxin?

Botox® is a medicine that acts as a muscle relaxing injection and is used by millions around the world to improve the appearance of facial lines associated with movement. Botox® is the brand name for Botulinum Toxin, a protein that is produced by the clostridium botulinum bacterium.

This popular cosmetic injection effectively smooths out fine lines and wrinkles, restoring a youthful, rejuvenated appearance. The treatment can also lift eyebrows and the corners of the mouth.

A non-surgical treatment, it relaxes the skin due to the paralyzing effect that the injections have on the facial muscles. It has been used for many years in the medical and cosmetic industries and is proven to be both safe and effective.

Botox®

How does Wrinkle Relaxation work?

Botox® helps relax muscles that when contracted create lines and wrinkles. The injections are one of the most affordable, fastest working, safe and effective non-surgical ageing treatments available.

During treatment at our comfortable London clinic, Botox® is injected into a defined area. It is strongly diluted and placed in extremely small quantities directly into the muscle fibres that are responsible for the lines that arise during facial expressions.

For example, it can be injected into the forehead, frown lines, crow’s feet and lines around the mouth area. The injections block the stimulus transfer from nerves to muscles, resulting in a relaxing effect that smoothes out wrinkles, lines, and creases. It can also be used to decrease the facial volume or lift certain features, such as the What areas can be treated at our London Botox clinic?

faq’s

about Botulinum Toxin (Botox®)

Botulinum toxin is regarded as a non-surgical treatment. The treatment involves several tiny injections of Botox® that are administered directly into the skin to facial lines associated with movement. Treatment typically takes around 15 minutes and no anaesthetic is necessary as discomfort is minimal.

At Our Clinic we will give you specific verbal and written aftercare instructions that will give you the best outcome. We also recommend you book a post-treatment appointment after 2 weeks so that we can assess the results and perform a free top-up if necessary.

Botox® treatments usually take effect after 3-5 days and take 2 weeks for the maximum effect to come. There is a small possibility of minor bruising, this will resolve over a few days.

After two weeks, the effects of the treatment softens. The effect lasts between 3 to 6 months (average 4 months). Patients who have had several injections often find the effect persists longer in specific areas such as the forehead.

Side effects of treatment are generally relatively mild, temporary and resolved without additional treatment. There may be mild discomfort or a stinging sensation as the injection is administered. Some mild redness and swelling for several hours after treatment can occur and uncommonly (less than 5%) can bruise.

Occasionally there can be asymmetry, and at two weeks a minor touch up treatment can be completed.

Very rarely, there can be a temporary mild weakness of the upper eyelid or brow (termed ptosis) with drooping of the eyelid or brow, typically lasting a week. This is temporary and eye drops can be prescribed to counter this effect. All side effects are temporary and resolved without additional treatment.

Over time our cheeks can flatten and our original natural cheek curvature can start to soften and appear lower. Ageing changes also take place under the surface of the skin where the gradual loss of supportive tissue structures and the long-term effects of gravity means that larger areas of your face lose volume and shape. These changes particularly affect the cheeks and chin.

Carefully placed filler treatments add volume to beauty points or replace volume where it has been lost. Advanced dermal fillers can, therefore, restore our ageing loss of volume in the cheeks, help replenish hollows, and work to build up cheekbones.

Although different HA Filler products can be used (including Restylane®, Stylage, Juvederm®, Voluma® and Volbella®) these have characteristics that favour improving the cheeks and are designed to tackle larger areas of volume loss for a flattering and refreshed look that lasts.

At Our Harley Street Aesthetic Clinic we have pioneered the use of customised Botox® to each individual person.

At Our Harley Street Aesthetic Clinic, we believe in a natural augmentation of the face and specialise in natural-looking results. Additionally, dermal fillers can be used for other facial areas at the same time to give an overall enhanced natural result.

For some patients we provide super conservative treatments, these maintain some movement while softening facial lines. These specialist treatments provide a more natural result but tend to last for less than four months.

We use the application of the Phi Golden Ratio (used in many of the most famous Renaissance paintings of Leonardo Da Vinci) to the human face to apply the principles of this facial balance and beautification.

We have treated many celebrities and A-listers with these techniques to enhance natural beauty, a term we describe as beautification of the face, enhancing the natural Phi Golden Ratio Lines.

Our Clinicians are very experienced and gentle with these non surgical treatments

We use a combination of measures to minimise discomfort. These include the use of:

  • a powerful numbing local anaesthetic cream
  • a state-of-the-art super fine needle made in Japan to minimise discomfort

an additional numbing and vibration device that uses Nobel Prize-winning research on ‘The Gate Control Theory of Pain”.

In general, Botox lasts 3-4 months. There will certainly be patients in which in lasts longer, in that 4-6 month range, or shorter, in that 2-month range. It is also common for first-timers to notice that it may not last as long initially but may last longer after the second treatment.

Baby Botox

Best for People Looking to Prevent Signs of Aging

Depending on whom you ask, you’ll get differing opinions on exactly when someone would benefit from starting Botox.

“For younger patients, Botox may help prevent or slow down the progression of lines, particularly around the eyes, eyebrows, and forehead

“Baby Botox” is a term that often refers to the desire for subtle, rather than more dramatic, changes. In this event, the doctor would inject smaller amounts of Botox. Baby Botox is really a reflection of an ongoing trend towards broadening the market to offer smaller, more subtle changes to a larger pool of interested patients.

One place this can be especially effective is the brow. In younger patients, Botox can be utilized to affect the balance of muscles. We can lift the brows, shape, and give them contour.

BlowTox

Best for People Looking to Stop Scalp Sweating

Dealing with an overly sweaty scalp? Botox may be able to help. Nicknamed “BlowTox,” this is Botox injected into the scalp to prevent perspiration.

For some people, this excessive sweating signals a medical condition called hyperhidrosis, according to the International Hyperhidrosis Society. For others, it’s a matter of keeping a sweaty scalp at bay to preserve a hairstyle.

Botox has been reported to reduce both sweating and oil production. In fact, it’s FDA-approved for the treatment of excessive underarm sweating (hyperhidrosis).

Botox injections block the chemical messenger that triggers sweat glands. When you reduce oil and sweat in the scalp, your hair won’t be bogged down with grease and wetness.

BroTox

Best for Guys Who Want to Get in on the Anti-Wrinkle Treatment

Don’t think that botulinum toxin therapy is just for women. In fact, one of the most common surgical and nonsurgical procedures for men is neurotoxin.

One of the most popular areas to target? The “11s.” Many men have deep frown lines between the brows. When those lines are deep, it makes a person look older or even angry. He also says that many men get Botox in both the crow’s-feet and frown line areas, which may have the result of lifting droopy brows — and making someone appear more awake or less serious.

Jeuveau (‘Newtox’)

Best for Ex-Botox Users

The latest buzzword refers to a recent neurotoxin injectable on the market.

Longtime users of Botox may find that they become resistant to it over time. We hear patients tell us all the time that Botox used to work better for them years ago, even though we’ve been weakening the muscles over time with the injections.

Another potential perk: Jeuveau is thought to work quickly. In one study published in March 2019 in the journal Dermatologic Surgery, the researchers reported that people using Jeuveau saw a “marked difference” in aesthetic improvements during the first post-treatment visit on day two, compared with the placebo group. When it was used to treat frown lines, people in the millennial age group responded better to Jeuveau than adults born in 1981 or before. They noticed a faster onset and longer duration of the neurotoxin, potentially because younger folks had less-pronounced lines that responded to treatment more visibly. What’s more, when used regularly, the appearance of lines may improve even when at rest, and the authors suspect this may be due to soft tissue changes after repeated use.

What is Micro-needling?

Microneedling is a cosmetic procedure designed to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, scarring, acne, skin pigmentation issues, rosacea, and more. During this procedure, an esthetician will puncture the skin with hundreds of fine needles to purposefully cause trauma to the skin. To do this, estheticians will use a small roller-type device or a pen with multiple fine needles. They will roll the device over the affected area and apply serums/lotions afterward to produce the desired effect.

How Does It Work?

In almost all situations, purposefully injuring your skin does more harm than good. However, with microneedling, this is not the case. Microneedling works by traumatizing the skin to produce collagen during the healing process, but not to the point of causing lasting damage. As your skin heals, it fills the small punctured areas with collagen. The effect is satisfactory, smoother, younger-looking skin.

Microneedling

Benefits of Micro-Needling

A study in the Journal of Plastic, Reconstructive & Aesthetic Surgery (JPRAS) found that microneedling effectively reduced the appearance of scars and wrinkles. As such, microneedling can be used to treat a variety of skin conditions. Benefits of this treatment include:

  • Reduction in the appearance of wrinkles
  • Even skin tone
  • Removal of hyperpigmentation and age spots
  • Shrunken pores
  • Reduction of acne

Similarly, microneedling has little to no downtime or side effects compared to other procedures that offer the same benefits. Most individuals can enjoy the benefits of microneedling after just 24-48 hours.

MicroNeedling and Aging Skin

As evident from the numerous benefits of micro-needling, many people with aging skin find an ideal solution with microneedling. As we age, our body naturally produces less collagen and elastin (the chemicals that keep our skin plump, wrinkle-free, and youthful). Because microneedling stimulates collagen and elastin production, the result is more youthful and even skin. The skin becomes plump, fuller, and less wrinkled as the collagen fills the tiny holes left by the micro-needling device. Similarly, the elastin can help lift any sagging, drooping skin. And finally, you can expect brighter, more radiant skin.
